Paphos is the softer, slower end of the island — a UNESCO-listed archaeological town with the clearest water in Cyprus on its doorstep and the wild Akamas peninsula behind it. Coral Bay, Pegia and the harbour

The harbour and Kato Paphos are the tourist heart — mosaics, the castle, waterfront restaurants. Coral Bay, fifteen minutes north, is the family choice: a sheltered sandy bay with lifeguards and a walkable line of tavernas. Pegia sits on the hillside just above it, which is where you trade a beachfront address for a view over the whole coast and a five-minute drive down.

Water and coastline

Coral Bay and Corallia are the swimming beaches; Lara Bay to the north is a protected turtle nesting site and deliberately undeveloped — go for the walk, not for sunbeds. The Blue Lagoon at the tip of Akamas is reached by boat trip from Latchi or by 4x4 track, and it is the single most photographed piece of water on the island for good reason.

History you can walk to

The Paphos Archaeological Park holds the Roman mosaics of the House of Dionysus and is a genuine half-day. The Tombs of the Kings sit further along the same coast road. Both are open year-round and are considerably more pleasant before 10am in summer.

Getting here and around

Paphos airport is 15 to 25 minutes from most of the area — the shortest transfer of any Cyprus region. A car is worth having: the good beaches, the Akamas trails and the hill villages are all short drives, and bus coverage north of Coral Bay is limited.
