Where to stay in Limassol

Limassol is Cyprus's most year-round city — a working port and wine town that happens to have fifteen kilometres of seafront promenade running through it. Stay here if you want restaurants open in February, a beach you can walk to after dinner, and the Troodos mountains and Kourion ruins both inside a forty-minute drive.

The city versus the coast

Central Limassol and the Marina put you in walking distance of the old town, the Molos promenade and dozens of tavernas — best if you would rather not rent a car. Twenty minutes west, the cliffs above Pissouri swap that for quiet: a single bay, a handful of village tavernas and dark skies at night. Most guests who want both book the coast and drive in for one or two evenings.

Beaches worth the drive

Limassol's city beaches are dark sand and easy — Dasoudi is the one with the pine grove and shade. For clear water head west: Governor's Beach with its white chalk rocks, Avdimou for space, or Pissouri Bay, which stays swimmable well into October. Blue Flag facilities and sunbed hire are standard on the organised stretches.

Eating and wine country

The old town around Saripolou Square carries the meze houses and the late bars; the Marina is the smarter, quieter end. Inland is the reason wine people come to Cyprus at all — the Krasochoria villages above the city, Omodos and Vouni in particular, are a thirty to forty-five minute drive and easily a full day.

Getting here and around

Larnaca airport is roughly a 50-minute drive, Paphos airport about 45 minutes; both have desk car hire and pre-booked transfers. Within the city, buses run along the seafront and taxis are plentiful. If you are staying outside the city, budget for a car — rural bus service is thin.
